Unfortunately, I think that COVID-19 will almost exclusively what anyone will be talking about for some time. This post is much the same! With people working from home remotely and most of the general public staying home and engaging in social distancing, things have definitely changed our way of life, although hopefully temporarily. A professor at Carnegie Mellon, Vyas Sekar, who does work related to network security raised warnings to organizations that now is the time to be as prepared as possible on a security front. Chief among his concerns is the idea that whereas previously some organization may have had a closed network or specific security practices in place that cannot maintain when working remotely. Now, those all exist on the open internet as we’ve transitioned to the remote model. He went on to say that previously, companies/organizations would be concerned about allowing employee devices on their closed networks for fear of malware or lapsed security policies. However, now the opposite is somewhat true. Work devices are being brought home, and further, those original concerns have evaporated as these entities are unable to suspend operations completely and need to make things work in the interim until this pandemic relaxes. Typically, not following recommended practices would endanger some individual. The point here being that companies are now also at risk by the actions of the employee working from home on his/her own devices. If ever there was a time to teach employees about safe policies and practices, it’s now.
